All This Time

I looked out across
The river today
I saw a city in the fog
And an old church tower
Where the seagulls play
Saw the sad shire horses
Walking home in the sodium light
Saw two priests on the ferry
October geese on a cold winter’s night

And all this time
The river flowed
Endlessly,
To the sea.

Two priests came round
Our house tonight
One young, one old,
To offer prayers for the dying,
To serve the final rite
One to learn, one to teach
Which way the cold wind blows
Fussing and flapping in priestly black
Like a murder of crows

I’d take a boat from the river

Due preti son venuti a casa nostra stasera
Uno giovane, uno vecchio, ad offrire preghiere per i moribondi
Per officiare il rito finale.
Uno insegnava, l’altro imparava
Da che parte soffia il vento gelido
Sbattendo e agitandosi in nero pretesco
Come uno sterminio di corvi
E tutto questo tempo il fiume ha scorso
Al mare senza fine
Se potessi scegliere prenderei una barca dal fiume
E seppellirei il vecchio
Lo seppellirei in mare

Beati i poveri, perché erediteranno la terra
Meglio essere poveri che un uomo grasso nella cruna di un ago
E quando le parole furono pronunciate, giuro, sentii
Il vecchio che rideva
“A che ci serve un mondo usato, come può
essere di valore?”

E tutto questo tempo il fiume ha scorso
Senza fine come una lacrima silenziosa
E non smetteva di scorrere
Padre, se esiste Gesù
Perché non è mai venuto a vivere qui?

I maestri ci dicevano, che i Romani costruirono questo luogo
Un muro e un tempio, il bordo dell’impero
Città di guarnigione
Vissero e morirono, pregarono i loro dei
Ma gli dei di pietra non emettevano suono
E l’Impero andò in briciole, finchè non rimasero
Che le pietre da ritrovare negli scavi

E tutto questo tempo il fiume ha scorso
Nella luce cadente d’un sole nordico
Se potessi fare a modo mio prenderei una barca dal fiume
Gli uomini impazziscono in congregazione
Stanno meglio soltanto
Uno ad uno
Uno ad uno…

E mai una volta nella mia vita
Mi sono sentito più solo di adesso
Anche se proclamo di dominare tutto quello che vedo
Non vuol dire nulla per me
